Preprint & Eprint Sources

Preprint or eprint services are good sources of the most current unpublished papers in some fields in physics and astronomy.  According to the Department of Energy, "preprints are manuscripts intended for publication that have not yet been published but may have been reviewed and accepted for publication; or they may be in the process of being circulated for comment prior to publication."

  • ArXiv.org
Maintained and operated by the Cornell University Library, and partially funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), arXiv.org is the major preprint archive in physics and related fields.
  • SLAC SPIRES HEP Database
From the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), this database collects records for research in High Energy Physics (HEP). This includes preprints and e-prints, as well as journal papers, technical reports, conference papers, etc.
  • PhysDoc (Physics Documents Worldwide)
This web site offers a basic index to preprints, research reports, annual administrative reports, and other materials available on the websites of organizations and individuals worldwide. International focus.
  • E-print Network (DOE/OSTI)
Using this gateway provided by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), you can search and link to almost 30,000 web sites and databases with scientific or technical e-print documents.
  • CERN Document Server
The CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) document server allows searching (and access) to preprints, as well as theses, reports, published articles, archives, and more. Allows multisearch with CERN Indico, KISS, and SPIRES.
  • DESY Preprints (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron)
DESY is a German National Laboratory, investigating the structure of matter, deeply immersed in photon science and particle physics.
  • KISS (KEK Information Service System)
Search interface for preprints from the KEK High Energy Accelerator Research Organization in Japan.
  • Virtual Technical Reports Center
From the Engineering & Physical Sciences Library at The University of Maryland, a clearinghouse of links to technical reports, preprints, reprints, dissertations, theses, and research reports of all kinds, organized by institution.
