Introduction

The Library collection includes several types of manuals and tutorials.

The manuals give step by step instructions in using the software, while the tutorials provide data and scenarios to solve particular problems or questions.

The following subject search for "arcgis" in the online catalog will lead you to various resources for the software.

You must have the software to use the tutorials or manuals.

Software

The College has a site license for the ArcInfo version of ArcGIS. The software runs on a PC with either Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional. For download instructions, click here. Use of the software is limited to current students, staff and faculty at Dartmouth College.

Along with our site license for ArcGIS, we have access to a variety of online tutorials and workshops which can help you better use the software. For access codes to the workshop and other information, please contact Lucinda M. Hall.

At this time, ArcGIS is available for use only by current Dartmouth students, staff and faculty.

Other GIS Software

There are other GIS software available for purchase. You may have used or know one of the items in the list below or another GIS software title.

    MapLand is an add-on to MS Excel. This add-on allow you to map data held in a spreadsheet. It is not a GIS, but a mapping software.

    ArcExplorer

    ArcExplorer is a freely available lightweight GIS data viewer from ESRI that lets you perform a variety of basic GIS functions. With ArcExplorer, you can display, query, and retrieve data.

      You can use ArcExplorer to see the data on this product. There are many different layers viewable in ArcExplorer or ArcGIS.

    Free GIS Software

    From the UNH Cooperative Extension course "GIS on Pennies a Day," this is a list of freely available GIS software. You can download and use the software.

     

    The software makers may ask that you register before downloading the software. It does allow them to keep track of who is using their products.
